Maryland vs Michigan State Prediction: Who Can End With Something Positive?

Will Michigan State or Maryland ever know Big Ten happiness again?

Both teams have locked in losing seasons, both have hit a wall – the Terps lost their last seven games after starting 4-0, including a win over Wisconsin, and Michigan State is 0-8 in Big Ten play – and in Ford Field in Detroit, one will have to take this as their bowl victory.

The Terps lost a slew of close games, and then came November, and then the blowouts started to kick in. It’s been a while since the team played well, but again, at least it has a Big Ten win.

Michigan State hasn’t caught any semblance of a break. It’s two missed pass interference calls away – to be overly dramatic about it – against Minnesota and last week against Iowa from having a few victories, but it also hasn’t created its own good luck.

Win and the Spartans avoid their worst non-2020 season since 2016.

Why Maryland Will Win

First and foremost, the Terps have to try to take a very long, very deep breath.

They haven’t been totally awful, but they’re playing like they’re waiting for the piano to drop on their collective head. They’re playing like they’re on a losing streak.

The passing game is still productive – even if it isn’t consistent enough – and outside of a disaster against Indiana, turnovers aren’t an issue. The Terps aren’t beating themselves.

Michigan State’s offensive line isn’t doing much of anything right. There’s not enough of a running game, and the backfield isn’t getting the time to operate. Maryland has a decent pass rush, and it has to force the mistakes and win the turnover and penalty battle.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State isn’t playing like it’s on a losing streak.

It had Minnesota all but beaten, and couldn’t close. It had Iowa done, and couldn’t close. The Penn State game wasn’t close, and a horrible call kept the momentum changing against Michigan in the double-digit loss, but for the most part, they’re still fighting.

Maryland can’t do a thing to control games. Quarterback Malik Washington’s accuracy issues are part of the problem on third downs, the defense isn’t coming up with stops, and overall, the team gets dominated in the time of possession battle.

Maryland vs Michigan State Prediction, Betting Lines

It’ll be an interesting situation.

The conditions will be perfect in Ford Field in Detroit – even though the weather in East Lansing has been great for late November, but the students are out of school.

Michigan State will finally get the game it needs when something goes right. It’ll be bumpy, but the defense will have one of its best games of the second half of the year to break the gloom.
