The Virginia Tech Hokies lead the VMI Keydets 45-0 at halftime at Lane Stadium. Yes, you read that correctly: the Hokies currently hold a 45-0 lead over the Keydets.

The Hokies got off to a fast start as sophomore running back Jeffrey Overton Jr. scored from 50 yards out on the first drive to give Tech an early 7-0 lead.

As it turns out, that would just be the start of the run for Virginia Tech’s offense, specifically the running game.

On Virginia Tech’s second drive, it was Marcellous Hawkins’ turn, who scored on a 9-yard touchdown to make it 14-0. What set up Hawkins’ run? A little bit of Beamerball, as safety Tyson Flowers blocked a punt.

More of that later.

Overton would score again on VT’s next possession, this time from 23 yards out. Suddenly, it was 21-0 Tech. After yet another defensive stop, the Hokies drove it in again, with Hawkins scoring from one yard out to make it 28-0.

On VT’s fifth drive, it settled for a John Love field goal, making it 31-0.

Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer was outstanding in the first, just barely missing two deep shots to wide receiver Que’Sean Brown. However, the two would connect in the second quarter when Grunkemeyer found Brown and let him do the rest, and he scored from 51 yards out to make it 38-0.

Remember how we told you there was more Beamerball?

Defensive end Cortez Harris blocked a VMI punt, and the ball rolled to the end zone, where defensive back Knahlij Harrell landed on it for his first career touchdown to make it 45-0.

What a half in Blacksburg.

Here are the first-half stats:

  • Ethan Grunkemeyer: 16/19, 203 yards, 1 TD
  • Jeffrey Overton Jr: 5 carries, 82 yards, 2 TDs
  • Marcellous Hawkins: 8 carries, 57 yards, 2 TDs
  • Que’Sean Brown: 5 catches, 95 yards, 1 TD

Defensively, Virginia Tech held the Keydets to just 32 yards on 28 plays in the first half. The Hokies have four sacks.
