The Longhorns took the field for the first time in 2026 on Saturday against Texas State giving star quarterback and potential future number one overall draft pick Arch Manning a chance to show the hometown Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium crowd his talents.

A 14-0 first-quarter lead helped stake the Longhorns to a 59-7 home win over the Bobcats that included a 20-for-27, 305-yard, four-touchdown performance in the passing game from Manning along with one interception.

After the game, Manning was complimentary of his teammates while also shouldering the blame for an issue that arose.

“I like that we got a lot of guys involved, it seems like we’ve got a lot of playmakers who kinda do everything,” Manning said. “There was a rough patch before half, that was on me, other than that I thought it was a good first outing, obviously there’s a lot of room to improve, but I was pleased with the guys,” the Longhorns quarterback added in a postgame press conference.

Manning excelled against pressure and threw well outside the pocket against the Bobcats, continuing the positive momentum he built in his sophomore 2025 season with the Longhorns. Manning and Sarkisian’s Longhorns will need to play better next week against top-ranked Ohio State in Austin, a team they know all too well from clashes in recent seasons.

Coach Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns are hoping to return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2024, when they lost to the eventual national champion Ohio State Buckeyes, but have a tough road ahead of them including a game against the Buckeyes next weekend. Win next Saturday, and Manning could vault himself to the front of the Heisman Trophy race, while putting himself and his teammates in the driver’s seat for a College Football Playoff berth early in the 2026 season.
