Texas A&M football's suffocating defense paved the way for a 50-0 victory against the Missouri State Bears to kick off the 2026 campaign at Kyle Field on Saturday night.
The Aggies' first-team defense gave up just 55 yards on 29 plays in the season opener. Meanwhile, junior quarterback Marcel Reed showed his offseason development, throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Texas A&M had three running backs rush for over 40 yards, 77 of which came from senior Rueben Owens II.
Noah Mikhail led the way on defense with seven tackles, followed by transfer linebacker Ray Coney, who notched six tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss, with Texas A&M's sole forced turnover coming from Ryan Henderson.
For head coach Mike Elko, the performance marked his 20th win as the head coach in Aggieland, but he's looking for much more this season. That includes a massive non-conference matchup against Arizona State in an SEC-versus-Big 12 showdown in Bryan-College Station next Saturday.

Elko's opening statement after the season-opening win
"Good to go out there and get this thing started. Happy with how the defense came out and played. They played to the level we hoped that they would. Offensively, we scored on the first drive, then hit a rut, then we responded," Elko said. "It was a good night. Thank you to the 12th Man. Over 107,000-plus. Largest opening crowd in Texas A&M history."

"The message was we need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot, and they did it. My message wasn't about anything, but we need to go out and play better," Elko said.

"There were so many young, talented players out there. I could have stayed out there for another two quarters watching those guys play," Elko said.

"It was a combination of things. The way Coney and Mikhail have played, and I'll throw Lockhart and Watkins in there, has made us feel confident that we could wait until Daymion was really ready," Elko said.
Elko on what he saw from Texas A&M's wideouts
"At times, inconsistent and at times, really good. It was good to see Horton get a touchdown. Mario Craver did some nice things in the screen game. We had an OPI and a fumble that were costly," Elko said.
Elko liked what he saw from the freshmen
"Our strength is our depth. We will lean on those guys and keep developing them," Elko said.
Elko impressed with running backs KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker
"Those two kids are going to play a lot. They will play much more meaningful reps (going forward)," Elko said.
Elko's thoughts on the shutout
"You don't talk about that, but you talk about a standard. When you go out there to play to that standard, when you have a talent advantage, it's rewarding to show them what they are capable of," Elko said.
Mikhail speaks on the chemistry of the defensive unit and what he's learned from the veterans
"The biggest thing I learned is leadership. The older guys have shown leadership. Between Dalton Brooks, Marcus Ratcliffe and Daymion Sanford, they are big-time leaders, and they really showed up," Mikhail said.

"I think, as a whole, defensively, we played really well. What the coaches have been stressing to us, we accomplished, focus and urgency," Mikhail said.

"It feels great. We had 11 new faces out there. Playing in Kyle is something different. It brings the energy and level of everyone's play up," Mikhail said.

"My first game as an Aggie was amazing. What I was told about the crowd, especially when we came out, I definitely felt it," Horton said.

"Marcel had a great night. He played his tail off. He led like the quarterback he is," Reed said.

"I think for the first game, I played well. The team did pretty well. It was a slow start after the first touchdown. (The) second half, we bounced back and did what we were supposed to do," Reed said.
Reed liked what he saw from his wideouts in the opener, especially Horton
"I thought it was cool that both of our No. 7 transfers scored the first touchdown of 2025 and 2026. Happy for Zay. I think he's going to be a great guy for us. You saw the vertical threat he can be. Excited for what's in store for him and us," Reed said.
Aggies weren't showing all of their cards on Saturday
"When you play in the first game of the season, you don't want to show all your stuff. We executed the base plays well enough," Reed said.

"They said more to me. They tried to lift me up. (I) respect those guys a lot and the care they have for their quarterbacks. Those guys want to protect. I know they will get it done each Saturday," Reed said.

"Brady Hart is a great QB. He has a lot of weapons as well. You saw KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker tote the rock a little bit," Reed said.
Reed on scoring 50 and shutting out the Bears
"I was hoping to get at least 50 on the board and got it right on the dot. When we get into the fourth quarter, we have to find a different level," Reed said. "We wanted to put up more. We left some money on the table, but 50 is a good clip."
