Dabo Swinney became one of the highest-paid coaches in college football during the 2022 season. The 10-year, $115 million deal came three years after Clemson's last national championship. The longtime coach also has the most seniority of any coach on the highest-paid list.

Clemson started the 2026 season with a 51-10 loss to LSU. Swinney's team was dominated by the worst loss of his career. This tied the Tigers' record-high points allowed and the worst margin of defeat during the Swinney era.

Given the turbulent game to start the season with only 10 points scored, here are the details of Swinney's contract, including a formal buyout agreement that decreases each year he stays at Clemson.

Dabo Swinney buyout terms

According to Sportico, Swinney's contract includes a flat-rate buyout that decreases every year. One of the biggest takeaways is that Clemson would save $3 million if the school fired him during the 2026 season.

Since Swinney is approaching the final five years of his deal, he would be owed the remainder starting in 2027. This is the fifth year, and his flat-rate buyout is ending. So it's actually cheaper for Clemson to fire Swinney sooner rather than later.

The Swinney deal does not include a mitigation clause. This means if he goes and takes another job, which he said he would do last year, Clemson is on the hook for the entire amount.

His contract with Clemson includes an "Alabama clause" that requires him to pay a 150% higher financial penalty if he leaves Clemson specifically to become the head coach at Alabama.

Here's a breakdown of what Swinney would owe if he leaves Clemson:

2026: $3 million ($4.5 million if he leaves for Alabama)

2027: $3 million ($4.5 million)

2028: $2 million ($3 million)

2029: $2 million ($3 million)

2030: $1 million ($1.5 million)

Dabo Swinney bonuses

Swinney can earn up to $1.5 million in bonuses annually:

$25,000: Swinney is named as ACC coach of the year

$50,000: Each national coach of the year award given by a nationally recognized entity (maximum of three)

$50,000: Clemson plays in a conference championship game

$75,000: Clemson wins at least eight regular season games

$200,000: Clemson wins the conference championship game

$75,000:  Clemson wins eight or more regular-season games and plays in a non-CFP postseason bowl game

$150,000: Clemson makes the College Football Playoff

$250,000: Clemson plays in the CFP semifinals

$250,000: Clemson makes the national championship

$350,000: Clemson wins the national championship

Here was Clemson athletic director Graham Neff's statement of support for Swinney last year, despite the Tigers having their second-worst season in his 17 seasons.

"(Swinney's) ability just to connect with our players and to continue to lead and be an incredible leader and developer of men in college football going forward is unmatched, without question, and just an incredible fit here at Clemson," said Neff. "(It's) been shown for two decades that a coach has been at Clemson, and I expect that to continue for many, many years ahead."
