BYU rolls past Utah Tech with 56-point win in home opener

The BYU Cougars opened the 2026 football season with a 63-7 win over Utah Tech in Provo on Saturday night. Kalani Sitake's team entered the contest as a 50-point favorite, but outdid themselves against the in-state foe.

BYU turned every play into greatness and could do no wrong as well. In the end, the Cougars out gained the Trailblazers 521-184 in total yards, along with not committing a turnover. The 42-0 halftime lead allowed Bear Bachmeier and others to rest. The start of his sophomore season couldn't have been scripted any better. He threw for 198 yards, 3 TDs, and ran for 30 yards with another score.

The offseason allowed him to grow and there was evidence in his overall mechanics. Bachmeier looked crisp in fall camp, and it carried over into the start of the season. Legend Glasker's debut was outstanding as well. The Cougars freshman receiver had three receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns, along with another score on the ground. Four touches with three trips to the end zone isn't a bad way to make a first impression. Glasker's ability to separate was noteworthy and gives Bachmeier another target.

LJ Martin came into the season on the watch list for several postseason awards. The Doak Walker Award candidate carried the ball seven times for 54 yards on light duty for the Cougars. He's looking to put together his best season yet after rushing for over 1,000 yards in 2025. Martin is one of the best running backs in the country. He's also a vital part of the Cougars offensive attack.

Overall, BYU had six rushers with at least 30 yards against the Utah Tech defense. Freshman Devaughn Eka led the team with eight carries for 59 yards and the touchdown. The Cougars attacked the Trailblazers' defensive front with five BYU players scoring on the ground in the game. Another notable aspect was BYU's receivers averaged 12.5 yards per catch.

Utah Tech didn't have an answer for much. They'll get paid $450,000 for the loss, according to the agreement signed by both schools in 2022. What's interesting is Utah Tech was set to receive a flat $400,000. The extra $50,000 is due to BYU having to alter the original date. Not a bad pay day for Utah Tech, who didn't have to leave the Beehive State.

BYU prepares for their Big 12 openers next week. The Cougars host Arizona next Saturday. The game kicks off at 3:30 ET on FOX.
