Is LSU The Favorite To Win The SEC?

Well, that didn’t take long.

The Lane Kiffin era at LSU is officially here.

And if Saturday night was any indication, the rest of the SEC might have a serious problem.

No. 11 LSU absolutely destroyed Clemson 51-10 in Kiffin’s first game, turning what was supposed to be one of the biggest matchups of Week 1 into a complete embarrassment.

By halftime, LSU led 31-3.

It had outgained Clemson 336-54.

LSU had 21 first downs. Clemson had ONE.

That’s ridiculous.

And this wasn’t Louisiana Tech or some random FCS opponent.

This was Clemson.

The same Clemson program that spent years competing for national championships under Dabo Swinney just suffered the worst loss of Swinney’s 19 seasons as head coach.

Sam Leavitt looked exactly like the quarterback Kiffin needed.

After throwing an interception on his second pass of the game, Leavitt completely settled in and finished with 230 passing yards, 113 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.

His ability to run completely changed the offense.

But Leavitt wasn’t alone.

Wisconsin transfer Dilin Jones rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns, giving LSU two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the first time since Jayden Daniels and Logan Diggs did it in 2023.

That’s especially encouraging considering LSU ranked 126th nationally in rushing last season at just 104 yards per game.

The Tigers had 213 rushing yards in the first half alone Saturday.

And somehow, the defense might have been even more impressive.

LSU recorded four sacks, Jordan Ross returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown, and Clemson didn’t score its first touchdown until there were fewer than seven minutes remaining in the game.

By the end of the night, LSU had accumulated 644 total yards.

Clemson had been completely humiliated.

And Kiffin had made one hell of a first impression.

Obviously, it’s Week 1.

We’ve seen teams look incredible in September and completely fall apart once the SEC schedule gets difficult.

But this didn’t look like a team that needs months to figure out a new system.

LSU looked ready right now.

The Tigers have a quarterback who can beat defenses with his arm and legs, a running game that suddenly looks dangerous, explosive weapons everywhere and a defense that just suffocated Clemson.

We wondered all offseason how quickly Kiffin could turn LSU into a contender.

After one game, we might already have our answer.

LSU looks like one of the scariest teams in college football.
