It has been a challenging week for LSU head coach Lane Kiffin as he found himself at the center of another major college football controversy. A Louisiana court ruling granted a handful of former NFL players a fifth year of eligibility, and Kiffin moved quickly to sign two of them: tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, both of whom played for him at Ole Miss last season.
The SEC banned the practice, sued LSU and Kiffin personally, and the whole mess spilled onto the Pat McAfee Show, where Kiffin doubled down and argued conferences have no power to ignore court orders.
Lane Kiffin discusses pressure surrounding the ongoing SEC dispute
When Pat McAfee asked Lane Kiffin about the pressure surrounding LSU during College GameDay, Kiffin brought up the support he had received from McAfee throughout the week. As attention around the dispute continued to grow, Kiffin said McAfee’s advice helped him stay focused on his responsibilities.
Kiffin explained that he appreciated their friendship, especially given the criticism both men have faced throughout their careers, Kiffin said, “That’s why I’ve really appreciated our friendship and this week, your guidance with me about, you know, because between you and I, we’re about the two most hated people there are. You told me, ‘Hey, just focus on it; don’t worry about the noise. A lot of times, to do great things, you’re going to be hated.’”
Kiffin said he was focused on his team and was determined not to let outside criticism become a distraction. He suggested that criticism often comes with being a high-profile figure in college football. McAfee agreed with Kiffin’s point and replied, “Amen, brother.”
Kiffin’s comments came as the eligibility dispute involving two former NFL players continued to generate attention across college football. The situation has brought increased scrutiny to everyone involved as the season gets underway.
Kiffin and McAfee have also built reputations for being outspoken figures in college football. His remarks reflected the attention that has surrounded the situation in recent days.
SEC dispute focuses on former NFL players
The dispute started with Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Both players previously played for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss before moving on to the NFL. Wright signed with the Cleveland Browns, while Harris joined the New Orleans Saints. After their NFL opportunities ended, both players sought a return to college football.
They argued that they still had college eligibility under the NCAA’s five-for-five rule. Their cases went to a Louisiana court, which ruled in their favor and cleared the way for them to play again. The decision, however, did not settle the matter with the SEC.
The conference says players who have signed professional contracts should not be allowed to return to college football. On Sept. 3, the SEC filed a federal lawsuit against LSU, Kiffin and several university officials. The conference is seeking to keep Wright and Harris from playing for LSU.
Even after the court ruling, LSU did not put either player on the roster for its season opener against Clemson. The players remained unavailable as the legal dispute continued. That leaves their status for the rest of the season uncertain.
The case could affect more than just these two players. It could shape how college football handles players who have signed with professional teams and later seek to return to school. It also puts the authority of conference rules against court decisions, making this a case that could have a wider impact on college football.
