“My Job Is Not To Please You”: Lane Kiffin Doubles Down On Controversial “Pro Players” Drama Amid LSU’s 51-10 Rout Over Clemson

LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin made a controversial statement during halftime of their 51-10 blowout win against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday. At halftime, with LSU leading 31-3, Kiffin said during an on-field interview, “Imagine if we had pro players.”

Kiffin has been embroiled in drama this offseason with LSU management trying to add former NFL players to the roster, namely Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.

Lane Kiffin Remains Unapologetic

At the post-game press conference, when reporters asked Kiffin about this wisecrack, he blew off fears of public backlash, saying,

“What’s the difference? Everybody hates you. They can’t hate you that much more. So there you go. You got another line.”

Kiffin couldn’t play his NFL players because he might face SEC penalties, but the coach said he’s not ending the fight here.

“I’ve been criticized heavily for the last two weeks saying I did that.’ … But my job is not to please you and worry about what you’re going to write. My job is what I believe is right, and I believe we’re fighting for what was right for those kids. I’m not going to get into all the reasons, but that’s what I believe. And so many people don’t like that, but they don’t understand that.”

This whole issue started when a group of players filed a lawsuit against the NCAA for fifth-year eligibility. The court judge issued a temporary restraining order (TRO), which gave these players eligibility. LSU pounced on the opportunity and added two players, Wright and Harris, to their roster.

In response, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) passed a new rule. According to this new rule, players who have signed an NFL contract or are on NFL rosters will be banned from playing. Schools breaking this rule could face strict penalties. Kiffin benched these two controversial transfer players in the match against Clemson and, even without them, secured a big win by 41 points.

Clemson’s head coach, Dabo Swinney, strongly criticized this situation, calling it a new level of ‘tampering.’ In January, Swinney said,

“This is a whole other level of tampering. It’s total hypocrisy. …We have a broken system, and if there are no consequences for tampering, then we have no rules and we have no governance”

Meanwhile, before the game during the SEC Teleconference, Kiffin praised Swinney, saying,

“We only played him once over time, and Dabo’s done one of the best jobs in college football of sustaining over a long period of time that’s really hard to do, and to be as dominant as he’s been, win as much as he has, about as good as anybody’s ever done.”

Next week, the LSU Tigers will face Louisiana Tech, and after that, they are set to play Ole Miss in Oxford on Sept. 19.
