Three Assistants LSU's Next Coach Must Retain On Their Staff

The LSU Tigers program is going to go through some major changes this offseason as they bring in their next head coach, but it will be important for whoever that person ends up being to keep at least some things the same.

One of the biggest issues of the Brian Kelly era was that it never felt like they were truly able to capture the culture of the Tigers program. He chased some beloved coaches out of town, only to bring them back and realize his mistake in the first place.

The next coach will bring in some of his own coaches, it's what happens every time, but there are also a couple of people already on staff at LSU that must be retained for a couple of different reasons.

Here are three assistants that the next coach must keep around to keep from suffering the same mistakes as Kelly:

Interim Coach Frank Wilson

Wilson was the best hire that Kelly made. The current interim coach was brought back after a couple of years and has again proven his worth as a recruiter. Players and fans love him.

He has been the running backs coach for a while. Granted, the results haven't exactly matched the talent in recent years. It would be fine to bring in someone else for that role, but find something for Wilson to do to keep him on staff. He has been a wide receivers coach in the past.

DC Blake Baker

If Baker does not get hired away this offseason as a head coach, then there would be no excuse for bringing in anyone else to lead this defense next season. He already has a rapport with all of the young players waiting to break out and has led a unit that is even better than they were back in 2019.

They are allowing just 18.5 points per game, which is 16th best in the nation. He has proven that he has what it takes to get results that match the investment made into the roster. If the offense were even somewhat reliable, then this team would be in a much different spot. It's like a reverse of the 2023 issue when Jayden Daniels won the Heisman with a horrid defense.

Secondary Coach Corey Raymond

Baton Rouge has already seen what it looks like when Raymond leaves town and it's not good. Kelly replaced him and allowed him to the Florida Gators for two years. It did not take long for the Tigers to lose the mantra of "DBU" after some awful secondary play with him out of town.

The recruiting has picked back up since he returned and the results on the field speak for themselves. Both cornerbacks and safeties have been fantastic this season, and are set up for success with some great young talents already prepared for bigger roles. Raymond cannot leave town again, unless someone gives him a promotion.
