Texas A&M Jumps in ESPN FPI After 50-0 Season-Opening Rout

No. 8 Texas A&M football opened the 2026 season with the kind of result that gets attention beyond College Station.
The Aggies dismantled Missouri State 50-0 at Kyle Field, and the performance was strong enough to push Mike Elko’s team up one spot to No. 10 in ESPN’s Football Power Index heading into a much bigger test against Arizona State.

The headline starts with the defense.
Texas A&M held Missouri State to just 67 total yards, forced multiple turnovers and never allowed the Bears to establish any rhythm.
Noah Mikhail led the Aggies with seven tackles, while Ryan Henderson made an immediate impact with two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
That kind of dominance matters because Texas A&M’s schedule won’t stay friendly for long.
The Aggies still have road games against LSU and Alabama before hosting Texas at the end of the regular season.
Offensively, Marcel Reed looked much more polished than he did at times a year ago.
Reed officially completed 21 of 30 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 20 rushing yards.
His mobility helped Texas A&M survive some early protection issues, but the bigger development was how composed he looked throwing the football.
Isaiah Horton led the Aggies with 76 receiving yards and scored his first touchdown for the program, while Mario Craver caught five passes for 41 yards and a score.
Texas A&M also piled up 236 rushing yards, with Rueben Owens II leading the way with 77.
There’s still work to do.
The rebuilt offensive line gave up too much pressure early, and that’s the kind of flaw a stronger opponent will attack immediately.
Still, the second-half improvement suggested the Aggies were able to adjust rather than simply live with the problem.
That combination of elite defense, a veteran quarterback and an offense with multiple playmakers is why the computers are buying in.
ESPN’s latest FPI gives Texas A&M a 21.3 rating, fifth-best among SEC teams, and projects the Aggies at roughly 8.3 wins.
The model also gives Texas A&M a 40.2 percent chance to reach the College Football Playoff, a 7.0 percent chance to win the SEC and a 3.4 percent chance to win the national championship.

Those numbers are still projections.
But after one week, Texas A&M already looks like a team capable of making them feel conservative.
