Football: Pirates rally from early deficit to stop Spartans

After trailing 14-6 in the first quarter, Greensburg outscored visiting Connersville 33-13 through the final three quarters en route to the 41-27 victory. With the win, the Pirates improve to 2-1 on the season. The Spartans fall to 1-2.
Connersville opened the scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run by Parker Flanigan. After both teams turned the ball over, Greensburg quarterback Levi Muckerheide scored on a 2-yard run. Jai Jackson added the 2-point conversion for an 8-7 Greensburg lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Connersville’s Flanigan found the end zone again on a 91-yard kickoff return. A second Muckerheide touchdown run, this one of 10 yards, and a point after by Jacoby Miller had the Pirates back in front with 6:16 to play in the first half.
With just :13 left on the second quarter clock, Muckerheide found Ryker Martin for the 40-yard TD pass. With the point after, Greensburg took a 22-14 lead to the break at the half.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Muckerheide added a 10-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 29-14.
Flanigan added a 17-yard touchdown run to send the game to the fourth quarter with the Pirates leading 29-21.
A 20-yard touchdown pass from Muckerheide to Layton Henry extended the lead to 35-21 with 11:24 to play in the fourth quarter. A Nick Martini touchdown capped the scoring for the Pirates in the 41-27 victory.
For the Pirates, Muckerheide passed for 157 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns. Martini added 103 yards rushing with a touchdown. Martin added 30 yards rushing and 95 yards receiving with a touchdown. Layton Henry added 27 yards receiving with a touchdown. Ethan Bishop had 35 yards receiving.
Adam Powers led the Pirates’ defense with seven total tackles. Chance Richards, Miles McKinsey, Esdras Mejia and Jackson all had six total tackles. Bentley Sageser added five tackles.
South Decatur
The Cougars picked up their first win of the season with a 36-0 win at Edinburgh. South Decatur is 1-2 on the season.
South opened the scoring with 1:43 to play in the first quarter on a Krystian Rigby touchdown run. Rigby added a second rushing touchdown a the 8:09 mark of the second quarter to put the Cougars up 14-0.
With Edinburgh starting on the 1-yard line, South’s defense forced a safety to push the lead to 16-0 with :35 to play in the half. With :12.5 left Braxton Evans connected with Will Ernstes for a 25-yard touchdown.
At the half, South led 23-0.
South put the game out of reach with another Evans to Ernstes connection for a 24-yard touchdown and a 4-yard TD run by Kagen Wren to make the final 36-0.
North Decatur
State ranked Milan proved it is worthy of the ranking with a 56-7 victory against visiting North Decatur. The Chargers fall to 1-2 while the Indians improve to 2-1.
Milan led 12-0 after the first quarter and 25-7 at the half before pulling away for the big win.
North’s Simon Barber finished with 31 yards rushing. Hayden Koehne added nine yards rushing and Matthew Fields had 79 yards passing and one rushing touchdown.
Barber led the defense with six total tackles. Brayden Murray added 5.5 total tackles and Spencer Sommers had five total tackles.
Batesville
The Bulldogs posted a 48-0 win against South Dearborn as Batesville improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with a 1-yard touchdown from Ajon Herbert in the first quarter. Ronan Post added the extra point to make it 7-0. Seniors Dylan Shane and Zadiin Small added touchdown runs in the second quarter as the lead grew to 21-0.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach with three scores in the third quarter. Small (2) and Rylan Yeager each found the end zone. Yeager scored on a 28-yard pass from quarterback Calvin Padgett. Zach Reed added a rushing touchdown in the fourth.
Rushville
Visiting Franklin County took a 49-14 lead to the half and closed out a 49-20 victory at Rushville.
Rushville’s Owen Zachery passed for 115 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Kai Pernell rushed for 16 yards and had a team-high 68 yards receiving. Ryder Hatten added 28 yards receiving and Joey Aldworth caught one pass for 16 yards.
Keegan Pavey led the Rushville defense with nine total tackles. Ty Ellis finished with seven total tackles and Zaelyn Gilles added five total tackles.
