‘It’s over for Dabo Swinney’: Paul Finebaum does not hold back

It’s been a difficult few seasons for Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney as his teams have not lived up to expectations over the past several years. Now, after a blowout loss to the LSU Tigers to open the season, one prominent ESPN analyst thinks his time

Not too long ago, Swinney was at the center of Clemson’s unprecedented run of success, leading the Tigers to two national championships and six consecutive seasons ranked inside the top five of the AP Poll. After yet another season seems to already be headed in the wrong direction, it seems like Swinney’s time at Clemson could be coming to a close.

Dabo’s Recent Struggles

Swinney is clearly the most accomplished active coach in college football. He has two national championships and 187 career wins at Clemson, making him the winningest coach in ACC history. However, he has fallen short of expectations for five consecutive seasons.

After six straight seasons finishing in the top five, Clemson has now gone five years without a top-10 finish. Last season was especially disappointing, as the Tigers went just 7-6, marking the second-worst season of Swinney’s tenure, which began in 2008. Swinney has struggled to adapt to the transfer portal and NIL era, and at this point, that weakness has become increasingly apparent.

On Saturday, those struggles showed up again in a big way as his team was completely uncompetitive against LSU, falling by a final score of 51-10 in a game where they trailed 31-3 at halftime.

‘It’s over for Dabo Swinney’

During Monday’s edition of “Get Up,” longtime ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum did not mince words when discussing Swinney’s future, as he made it clear that he thinks it’s “over” for the Clemson coach.

“First of all, if you think you’re going to go out and get Chad Morris from the dollar store reject base and think you’re going to save your program, you’re not going to. I am just in shock at some of Dabo Swinney’s moves. Bringing Chad Morris in. Going with the quarterback that he did,” Finebaum said on Monday’s “Get Up.”

“It’s over for Dabo Swinney. I know that sounds hyperbolic. I know that sounds like ‘Oh, there’s Paul Finebaum screaming from the lawn,’ but it’s the truth. It’s been trending for a number of years. This team played for the national championship six and a half years ago against LSU. And mostly it’s been the bottom since then.”

Swinney currently has a massive $60 million buyout, which could make it difficult to fire him. However, that’s not going to quiet the criticism.
