BYU RB Sione Moa reportedly 'doubtful' ahead of Big 12 matchup with Arizona

The BYU Cougars came out of the season-opening matchup against Utah Tech with a 63-7 win. However, there were a few injuries for Kalani Sitake's team on Saturday.

Defensive back Raider Damuni left the game with a leg injury. He needed help to get off the field and is projected to miss most of his senior season, according to a social media post from Damuni. Another injury that was less noticeable, but had a significant impact on the Cougars' offense happened with running back Sione Moa.

The backup running back to LJ Martin, racked up six carries for 22 yards before he left the game. Martin exited early after BYU took an early lead over Utah Tech. This allowed freshman running back Devaughn Eka to take over. He finished with eight carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Many assumed Moa exited due to the game being out of hand for Utah Tech, and BYU wanting to clear the bench. But that wasn't the case. Where does this leave the Cougars rushing attack? Eka showed consistency and could add value for the time being until Moa returns.

As of now, Moa status is up in the air. BYUtv's Spencer Linton has reported that Moa is likely doubtful when the Cougars host Arizona in a big Week 2 matchup. The start of BYU's conference schedule will be in Provo on Saturday.

Despite losing Moa and Damuni, the Cougars came away with several positives from Saturday's 54-point win over the FCS opponent. BYU put up 308 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. This was ai committee-style approach to the game. Sitake and his staff have to feel like the offense is in decent shape early in the season.

BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns against Utah Tech before halftime. The Cougars imposed their will on the Trailblazers' defense from the start. On the other hand, Utah Tech's offensive attack had one scoring drive and committed four turnovers.

All three phases of the game seemed to be running on all cylinders early and didn't let off the gas throughout the entire game. BYU continued its dominance streak over lower-division opponents. They haven't lost to an opponent outside the FBS ranks since 1960.

We'll know more about Moa's injury status later this week. The Cougars will likely have Martin carrying the majority of the load from here on out.
