In his first season with the Crimson Tide, Alabama football offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has learned an important lesson.
“(The) Iron Bowl is everything. You’ve got to win,” Grubb said.
Coming off a 56-0 shutout win over Eastern Illinois, the Crimson Tide are shifting focus into one of the, if not the, biggest games of the season.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer said Alabama‘s schedule has prepared the team to face tough opponents on the road at night, like in its 24-21 win at Georgia on Sept. 27.
“We understand it’s going to be a great experience there, and it’ll be one where we’re facing a team that wants to knock us off our goals,” DeBoer said. … “We’ve got to prepare for the noise, prepare for the emotions that come, and that’s what our season has done for us. We’ve been through a lot of that.”
Although it’s a household holiday to many across the state, DeBoer is expecting somewhat of the same as usual for any other game this season and preparing for it as such.
“There will be new challenges that present themselves in the game,” DeBoer said. “A lot of it will be new matchups, guys that have different people in front of them, strengths and weaknesses of the opponent every single week changes. So we’re just going to prepare our best, focus on what we do, because that’s what we’ve done all season long.”
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Grubb is thankful to be a part of one of the most well-known college football rivalries in the state.
“End of the season rivalry week, you’re just thankful to be at a place that has something that means so much to the state and to the program,” Grubb said. “So certainly with our players and people around the program, nobody’s taking it for granted. Just excited to be part of it and get in the thick of it with the guys. They know what it’s all about.”
Alabama will face Auburn in the 90th edition of the Iron Bowl at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Jordan-Hare Stadium
