Florida’s vibes are apparently doing just fine after one week of the Jon Sumrall era.
The Gators checked in at No. 7 in The Athletic’s first SEC vibes rankings of the 2026 season after opening with a 66-21 win over Florida Atlantic. That puts Florida in the top half of the league and, more importantly, comfortably ahead of the basement it occupied for much of last season.
“The defense wasn’t perfect, but who cares?” Seth Emerson wrote. “The offense scored more points in Jon Sumrall’s debut than Billy Napier’s teams did in four years.”
Subtle.
Emerson is obviously exaggerating for effect, but after watching Florida’s offense spend long stretches of the Napier era fighting for its life to get out of the 20s, a 66-point debut is going to inspire some dramatic language. Sumrall could probably hand the ball off on every play against Campbell and still have Gainesville feeling better about the offense than it did for much of 2025.
There were defensive issues, as Emerson (and Sumrall) noted, and giving up 21 points to FAU is not exactly something Brad White will frame and hang on the wall. But when the offense is scoring at will, that pill is easier to swallow.
Florida also benefits from the fact that the vibes around much of the SEC are still based on one game against overmatched competition. Georgia is No. 2 after beating Tennessee State, Alabama sits fifth after handling East Carolina and South Carolina is 10th after blanking Kent State. Does anyone really know anything yet?
That changes quickly for several teams this week, but not Florida. Campbell comes to Gainesville next, giving the Gators another chance to keep the honeymoon phase rolling before the real test begins Sept. 19 at Auburn.
