Bragging Rights: SEC Week 2 Betting Lines

Before we jump into and preview the SEC Week 2 slate, we have something to say. Going 16-0 against a cupcake schedule is not impressive. Yet, the SEC and every other SEC homer account wanted to beat that drum after the Week 1 slate came to an end on Monday night.

A closer look at the numbers shows the 16-0 record is more provocative than profound. The only really impressive win was the one by the team that was a pain in everyone’s backside all week: Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers. LSU scored early and often and made Clemson look like a G6 and made Dabo look like his best years had passed him by. As for the rest of the slate, please save us all the plaudits and the talk of a dominating weekend.
- Auburn has to thank former SEC QB DJ Lagaway for throwing behind his receiver to give the Tiger defender a chance to prevent Baylor from knocking them off in Atlanta.
- 10 teams scored at least 50 points in their wins. That was impressive against Clemson. Less so against the likes of Arkansas Pine Bluff and Tennessee State. FCS opponents no longer belong on an SEC schedule, whether it’s Week 1 or the week before Thanksgiving. The gap is just too big, and the games aren’t worth the price of admission for fans or the heat of 100+ degrees.
- The scoring margins were Exhibit A on how difficult it is to build and maintain a G6 roster. Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas didn’t need an extra second like Michigan to bury and dispatch their G6 opponents.
So, save your Week 1 sizzle; the SEC Week 2 slate has plenty of steam to actually get excited about.
Bragging Rights: SEC Week 2 Betting Lines
The Week 2 SEC slate actually provides an opportunity to make a statement. Go 16-0 this weekend, and it will actually say something. The SEC plays one ACC team on the road, two Big 12 teams, and three B1G teams. The games in Ann Arbor and Austin will go a long way in setting the regular season SEC-BIG narrative. SEC Week 2 Picks
Not a bad way to start the season. Skip the apple orchard this weekend; we have great games all day and all night long.
Week 1 picks: 5-0
Season: 5-0
- No. 25 Missouri at Kansas: The Border War heads to Lawrence. The Kansas Athletic Department is posting history memes to trash talk the Tigers. Who doesn’t love college football? Austin Simmons looked great for the Tigers last week.
Pick War: Missouri - No. 10 Oklahoma at No. 16 Michigan: Do you have a second? If so, go find the highlights from last year’s matchup in Norman. The Sooner defense took away the run and forced Bryce Underwood to pass and make plays. As we saw on Saturday night, that won’t bode well for the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
Pick: Oklahoma - No. 13 Alabama at Kentucky: We believe in Will Stein. Enough to pick them to upset the Tide? Nope. Not yet, at least. Alabama looked good on Saturday afternoon against East Carolina. Kalen DeBoer’s teams can start slow and look lethargic in games like this. It may happen on Saturday, but they find enough to pull out the win.
Pick: Alabama - No. 1 Ohio State at No. 5 Texas: Grab your popcorn; this one should be a lot of fun. Last year was a defensive slog, not so much this year. Both teams have elite offensive talent at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver. The Horns get payback in overtime in this one.
Pick: Texas - Arkansas at No. 21 Utah: This game doesn’t make sense for Arkansas. Rice-Eccles Stadium is one of the most difficult places to play in college football. That doesn’t bode well for a team that struggled against North Alabama last week and is trying to rebuild its team and culture.
Pick: Utah
