SEC reportedly seeks authority to expel LSU

The biggest story of the college football offseason was LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin’s attempts to add multiple players to their roster who had signed professional contracts and spent time with NFL teams during the preseason. Now, the SEC is looking for authority to push back.

According to a recent report, the SEC is now seeking the authority to expel LSU from the conference if necessary.

LSU Looks to Add Former Pro Players

Heading into the 2026 season, LSU and Kiffin had been moving forward with plans to bring in at least three players who signed professional contracts this summer, including former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.

Adding those players to the roster would break two separate league rules, as the SEC prohibits players from entering the conference after signing a professional contract while also restricting intraconference transfers outside of the designated transfer portal window.

However, a Baton Rouge judge has issued an order preventing both the NCAA and SEC from enforcing their restrictions related to eligibility, the transfer portal, and professional players returning to college football.

On Thursday last week, Judge William Jorden, out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ruled in favor of LSU by approving a preliminary injunction “that prohibits the NCAA and SEC from punishing any school” that fields former professional players. That would have paved the way for the players to potentially play in Saturday’s game against Clemson.

Ultimately, LSU opted against adding the players to the roster for this game. However, those players could still be added at a different point through the rest of the season.

SEC Looks For Authority to Expel LSU

While the court ruling would have potentially allowed the players to play in Saturday’s game, the SEC was reportedly considering the possibility of expelling LSU from the conference if it did roster the former professional players. Now, the SEC is seeking a ruling that would allow it to carry out that threat.

According to a report from ESPN college football insiders Pete Thamel, Dan Murphy, and Mark Schlabach, LSU is now seeking the authority to expel LSU from the league, even if it is not expected to actually take that action.

“The SEC filed an amendment to its federal lawsuit against LSU, Lane Kiffin and school officials on Tuesday, which seeks the authority for the SEC to expel LSU from the league. The SEC is not expected to take such action, but the filing indicates the seriousness of the league as it attempts to affirm the legal right to enforce its own rules. That was the point of the original federal suit filed last week,” Thamel wrote in a post on X.

It’s certainly been a dramatic storyline in college football this season.
