The Clemson football program stumbled out of the gates with an embarrassing 51-10 loss to LSU on the road Saturday evening. Dabo Swinney’s squad didn’t look like it belonged on the same field for the majority of the evening in Baton Rouge, prompting further questions about Swinney’s future with the program.
Swinney has been criticized for not adapting to the current NIL and transfer portal wave in the college football world, and was asked by insider Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper if he regrets his roster-building approach.
Instead of answering candidly, Swinney went on the offensive.

“Chapel, you come with all these questions. I’ll tell you, you’re the ‘gotcha guy.’ No I don’t. I regret being 0-1 right now… Can you ask me that at the end of the season? The season ain’t over,” he said, per Fowler on X, formerly Twitter.
Fans in the comment section were not exactly on Swinney’s side.
“Thank you for asking the tough questions. Seems like every other reporter is scared to do so,” wrote one fan.
“Dabo is lost in the sauce. Whether it’s the best team in the country or not. Why did Clemson get beat by 41? Why was Clemson not prepared?” wondered another.
Swinney has grown increasingly defensive in his press conferences over the past couple of years as his legacy in Clemson erodes following the Tigers’ fall from their championship heights of yesteryear.
While no one can take away what Swinney accomplished with the program in the 2010s, the head coach’s stubborn unwillingness to embrace the new era of roster-building has threatened to render Clemson obsolete in the college football world.
It may have already done so.
