After the dreadful loss by the Rutgers football team to UMass last Thursday, 37-21, the team has decided to make a decision that impacts the offense for Week 2 and possibly beyond. As the Rutgers football program’s embarrassing loss to UMass surrounds the team, the roster looks to wash the sour taste out of their mouths in Week 2, as a quarterback change is coming.

According to Pete Thamel at ESPN, Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano will start AJ Surace Friday night against Boston College, his first career start. He came in for quarterback Dylan Lonergan in the second half due to an injury, which is likely the main reason for the change.

“NEWS: Rutgers is making a quarterback change for the game at Boston College on Friday night, per coach Greg Schiano, as AJ Surace will make his first career start. Game one starter Dylan Lonergan left the game in the second half with an injury, which has led to the switch,” Thamel wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

In the aforementioned loss, Lonergan threw for 242 yards to go along with two touchdowns and three interceptions, as Surace threw for only 77 yards and a touchdown in limited playing time.

After the UMass defeat, Schiano told the media that Lonergan was removed from the game due to injury and that Surace will start. Schiano expressed how “extremely disappointed” Lonergan is about everything that transpired.

“These are great life lessons for our players,” Schiano said, via 247 Sports. “Things don’t always go the way that you anticipate or the way you want. But hey, what are you going to do now? What are you going to do now? That’s really all that matters in life. It’s not what happens to you; it’s how you respond. And that’s what I’m looking forward to seeing from myself first, from our coaches, and then from our football team.”

It remains to be seen when Lonergan gets healthy and how well Surace plays on Friday against Bostson College, as the Rutgers football team looks to get their first win.
