Deion Sanders, Colorado players preview Weber State after Week 1 win

The Colorado Buffaloes are coming off a Week 1 win against a formidable Georgia Tech team and are starting to gain some national attention. Deion Sanders, offensive lineman Chauncey Gooden and defensive end Lamont Lester Jr. spoke to the media to discuss the Week 1 win and preview their Week 2 matchup against Weber State.

Lester discussed his impressive Week 1 performance, where he racked up three sacks, five tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. He was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Gooden talked about being the only interior lineman to play both sides of the ball and continue the tradition at Colorado, highlighted by Travis Hunter's two-way prowess.

Sanders spoke about Weber State, how impressed he was with Buff Nation's turnout, a potential commitment and the changes in offensive philosophy this year.

Players remaining level-headed despite being big favorites against Weber State

Colorado may be a 30-plus-point favorite against FCS program Weber State, but the program's mindset heading into the Week 2 matchup is not changing.

"No rat poison," Lester said. "Don't let the internet and stuff like that get to your head."

Coach Prime added that Colorado is not taking anything for granted because he believes players at Weber State will be trying to prove themselves to Power Four teams.

Coach Prime hinted at a potential 2027 commit

With the Buffaloes expected to have a solid showing of recruits in Boulder this weekend, Sanders hinted that another recruit could be on the way.

"We have another one that we haven't annouced yet," Sanders said. "…We are not trying to lure them with money, we are trying to lure them with the game."

Sanders added that he tries to meet with the Colorado current group of commits once a week on a group call. He said they were "hyped" after the Week 1 win.

Special teams issues were personnel, not scheme

Colorado blocked a field goal and gave up a 100-yard kickoff return against Georgia Tech, but Sanders said Tuesday that he is not concerned about the unit.

"I'm not concerned about those issues because that's an easy fix with personnel," Sanders said. "Some things are schematic. That wasn't schematic. That was personnel. We've fixed it with personnel already…understanding how vital special teams is, that message has been sent."

Sanders remained noncommittal about his starting kicker, saying that he needs to see more consistent practice reps before he decides what happens in the game.

Buffaloes' run game being a strength is by design

Colorado ran a pass-first offense for most of Deion Sanders' first three seasons at CU, but that has completely shifted in 2026.

"You gotta go with your strengths as well," Sanders said. "At the point in time [in 2023], the goal wasn't to run for 300 yards… I'm excited about the physicality that accompanies the run game."

Buff Nation's showing impressed Coach Prime

When Colorado scored the go-ahead touchdown late against Georgia Tech, Bobby Dodd Stadium went silent before CU fans erupted, realizing that their team had taken the lead late.

"Hats off to Buff Nation," Sanders said. "I think we have the best fans in the country. When we scored that last touchdown it sounded like it was a home game. They showed up in Atlanta and showed out."

Sanders hopes that Buff Nation will come out in droves for the home opener despite the Buffs being enormous favorites.
