‘He Has Lost the Plot,’ ‘His Days Are Numbered’ — CFB World Rips Clemson HC Dabo Swinney for Calling Out Reporter’s ‘Controversial’ Question

Dabo Swinney is one of the most recognizable names and faces among college coaches. He established himself as one of the top college football coaches when he led the Clemson Tigers to the National Championship four times in five years, from 2015 to 2019, winning two of them.
However, in recent years as the sport has changed and leaned more into the transfer portal and NIL, Swinney and the Clemson Tigers have not been able to keep up with some of their opponents, with the team losing at least four games for three consecutive years, something that they hadn’t done since 2011, culminating in their worst season since 2010 last year with a record of 7-6.
Amidst the slump, some questions have been raised about Swinney’s future with the program.

Swinney and the Tigers followed up a disappointing 2025 season with a brutal loss to start 2026, taking a 51-10 beating from LSU.

Following the loss, Swinney was asked whether he regretted how the roster was constructed heading into this season, and he became defensive and called out the reporter, Chapel Fowler.
“You come with all these questions, you’re the gotcha guy,” Swinney said laughingly in response to the question. “No, I don’t man. I regret being 0-1 right now. I regret that.”
“Can you ask me that at the end of the season,” Swinney asked. “The season ain’t over, I mean we got one game, we got 11 more. What if we go 11-1?”
The defensive responses and the claim that the question wasn’t fair didn’t sit well with social media. Swinney is in the fifth year of a 10-year, $115 million contract he signed in 2022. The contract makes him the highest-paid coach in the ACC, and with his team not playing up to expectations, his reaction to this question in particular has left fans angry.
“Dabo Swinney now blaming the media for his screwups … that’s when you know his days are numbered at Clemson,” said Brad Crawford of CBS Sports.
“This stuff gets old when you’re getting killed on the field,” added Mark Ennis on X.
Dan Wolken, a college sports columnist for Yahoo Sports, came to Fowler’s defense in addition to criticizing Swinney, calling the question “totally fair.”
“He has lost the plot,” added Wolken.
“It’s unfortunate, but he’s clearly not built for this era,” said Sam Neumann. “The fact he thinks this is a controversial question when his team endured the worst ass beating of his tenure is certainly something.”
Swinney’s teams at Clemson were among the best in college football from 2012 to 2022, but as the landscape has changed, Swinney and the Tigers have struggled to keep up with the rest of the top teams.
If Swinney and the Tigers continue to struggle, it is fair to wonder whether the school would consider moving on from their longtime coach. However, while performance could dictate that if it continues to spiral, the cost of doing so makes that unlikely.
According to USA Today, if Swinney is fired before January 1, 2027, a buyout would cost the organization $57 million.

Due to the high financial cost and the extent to which the team is built around Swinney’s vision, it is unlikely he will go anywhere. In the meantime, he and the Clemson Tigers will look to shake off a rocky start to their 2026 season, beginning on September 12, when they take on Georgia Southern at home in Week 2.
