Rutgers needed to make a change after they were embarrassed in their season opener by UMass. They were dismantled by a UMass squad that didn’t win a game last season.
Rutgers QB Dylan Lonergan turned it over four times and left the game with an apparent injury. This led head coach Greg Schiano to start QB AJ Surace against Boston College this week.

Lonergan beat out Surace during training camp to earn the right to start against UMass in the season opener. His performance was brutal, and Schiano decided to make a change.

Lonergan is hurt, though, and hasn’t practiced yet, so Schiano is rolling with Surace. He didn’t rule Lonergan out of the game and left the door open for Lonergan to be dressed to play in an emergency.
But fans aren’t convinced that Surace under center will do much for the Scarlet Knights.
“Scapegoat,” added one fan.
“It’s not going to matter. That team is BUNS,” said one fan.
It didn’t come as a major surprise, considering the QB battle was close, and Lonergan is still dealing with an injury. They trust Surace, and it’s hard to play worse than Rutgers did last week.
“Surely it can’t get worse, right?… Right?” said one fan.
“Not surprising after the game against UMass. Big opportunity for Surace on Friday,” said one fan.
USC fans are already keeping their eyes on Rutgers because they’ll play each other the following week. They are enjoying the QB struggles in Piscataway.

“USC plays Rutgers next week and they are on to their backup QB in game 2,” said one fan.
For now, though, both teams have a game to play in between. Rutgers needs to set their eyes on a hungry Boston College team that is also looking to put a poor performance behind it.
Lonergan was the starting quarterback for the Eagles in 2025 but was benched during the year and left for Rutgers. Eagles fans aren’t happy that they won’t see their old quarterback, Lonergan, start against them, because they feel they would have a better chance of winning if Rutgers started Lonergan.
“Lonergan throwing chicken wings, fried catfish, yams, collard greens, mac ‘n’ cheese, cornbread, braised oxtail, and neck bone directly into our defenders’ hands was the only chance we had at getting something from this game. Safe to say it’s over,” said one BC fan.
Surace is getting his chance to shine on Friday night under the lights on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 tragedy. Both Rutgers and Boston College are honoring their fallen victims.

It is the Red Bandana game for Boston College, which honors Welles Crowther, who saved the lives of 18 people while wearing a red bandana. The Scarlet Knights will honor the 37 alumni who lost their lives with the number 37 on their helmets.
It’s going to be a packed house on primetime in Chestnut Hill. This game should have everything: Lonergan’s revenge game spoiled by injury, Surace’s first start, the Red Bandana game festivities, and two teams coming off brutal Week 1 losses, all storylines set to take place under the lights.
