‘Definition of Rat-Poison’ — Lane Kiffin Breaks Silence on Paul Finebaum’s Constant Scrutiny

LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin has been making headlines because of his desire to add players from the 2022 college class who participated in NFL training camps or preseason games to LSU’s roster.

Kiffin has been strongly criticized by SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum, who opposes the strategy. During a recent appearance on SEC Nation, Finebaum called Kiffin “a 51-year-old man behaving like a 16-year-old” and added, “The worst part—there are no adults in the room.”

Lane Kiffin Fires Back at Paul Finebaum

The head coach was not surprised by the reaction. When asked Monday about Finebaum’s criticism, Kiffin said:

“When Paul does it, I like it because it usually means something good is about to happen. But he is the definition of rat poison. He sent me today his own thing where he said about we’re the hottest place to go and every recruit should want to come here and everything. And so I responded back to him like, thanks for the rat poison, because that’s what your players read. And then all of a sudden they think, okay, we’ve arrived.”

Kiffin also made it clear that he does not have any personal animosity toward Finebaum. He understands that media personalities are expected to create debates and offer contrasting opinions, even when their comments upset the people involved.

“I like Paul, I really do,” Kiffin added. “And he knows that. He said something one time to me about being like the ex that texts, and you respond back. I don’t think of Paul like that. They have a job to do, and I understand that. Those things used to make me mad and upset. And then I realized, ‘Okay, they have a job to do.’ Especially when two people go on a show, usually they’ve got to take opposite sides.”

Kiffin also recalled how Finebaum regularly criticized Alabama during Nick Saban’s tenure, only for the Crimson Tide to go on and enjoy successful campaigns. His point was that Finebaum’s scrutiny can sometimes be interpreted as a positive sign for a program with championship expectations.

The controversy surrounding LSU intensified after the program pursued Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, who had spent time with NFL teams. Although both players enrolled at LSU, the Tigers did not add them to the roster for the season opener amid an ongoing legal dispute involving the SEC’s eligibility rules.

Despite the distractions, LSU started the 2026 college football season impressively on Saturday, defeating Clemson 51-10 at Tiger Stadium. The dominant performance allowed Kiffin to answer at least some of his critics on the field.

That approach reflects Kiffin’s long-standing willingness to embrace controversy, challenge convention, and keep his program at the center of the ongoing national college football conversation.

For now, Kiffin appears comfortable with the attention surrounding his unconventional roster-building approach. Rather than allowing Finebaum’s criticism to frustrate him, the LSU coach is using it as motivation while warning his players not to become complacent because of the praise that followed their commanding opening victory.
