Colorado football tries to learn from missed opportunities ahead of Weber State

Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders was asked at this weekly press conference about the notion that most teams improve the most from the first to second game. It's a concept Coach Prime had never heard before. He asked the room of reporters if they had heard it before.

“Anybody ever heard that before? I never heard it," Sanders said. "Must be on the white side of town. All the Black folks sitting up here like naw, I ain’t never heard that before. I had never heard that before.” Then proceeded to ask whoever said that.

After rephrasing the question, Sanders was asked what he would be most excited about if he saw that improvement in the next game.

“We gave up a few passes in the secondary we shouldn’t have. Us pressing will eliminate that. Offensively, we have to do so much better. Receivers and the quarterback, seeing the game. Special teams need to be special. Not sure why we call them special teams when they aren’t special. That’s a good start.”

Strengths and weakness

Big 12 named Colorado the best defensive lineman of the week. Coach Prime asked him to repeat that, so it was clear he was referring to a Colorado player.

“It starts up front. Stability starts up front," Sanders noted. "Those guys were phenomenal. I think they have so much more in them. I think we were two DE short. We always knew it was a strength. You guys said it wasn’t a strength. We let you guys talk. When they said we were small, we let them talk. We don’t refute it. We let you guys do your thing. And you’re really good at it too.”

Sanders asserted that they know what their strengths are as well as their areas to improve. Coming off of their most consistent trench game under Prime, there should be a focus on maintaining what they did against Georgia Tech. Many will view Saturday’s game vs Weber State as a possible ‘trap game’.

The Buffs will need to maintain their focus and attention to detail over the next few games. Colorado faces Big Sky FCS team Weber State on Saturday. Followed by Northwestern and Baylor on the road, before taking on Texas Tech and Utah at Folsom Field in consecutive weeks. The bowl eligibility math begins on Saturday.
