Clemson Doesn't Appear Happy With Dabo Swinney's 'Roster Construction'

Chapel Fowler hit on a sore subject for Clemson and Dabo Swinney on Tuesday when he asked the head coach if he regretted anything about his roster construction in the offseason after seeing the results of a 51-10 loss to then-No. 11 LSU on Saturday night.

Swinney took issue with the question, wanting to delay his answer until the end of the season. But the topic of conversation seems to be real at Clemson.

Per Pete Nakos of On3, the hot seat is warming up for Swinney. Sources told Nakos that the first questions for Tigers athletic director Graham Neff surrounding Swinney are the program's roster construction. That could play a big part in the team's decision on how to move forward with Swinney, who has a $50+ million buyout.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin added insult to injury when he told the ABC broadcast after Saturday night's game that his scout team offense put up more points on the LSU first-team defense during a mock game the week before.

The central controversy this offseason was Swinney's reluctance to add an experienced quarterback to the roster in the transfer portal, opting to let a quarterback battle play out between Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds. The two quarterbacks combined for 105 passing yards and one interception against LSU. 

Following the game, Swinney has made a couple of comments suggesting he didn't like how his program scheduled LSU for Week 1. He wanted a more favorable schedule early in the season to develop his quarterbacks.

“That’s what I said coming into it. That’s why I said, we didn’t want to guarantee (Reynolds) would play, but it was pretty likely he was going to play,” Swinney said, via On3. “So we needed to play games. 

"Again, I wish we had a game or two where you can work the kinks out, but that’s not the stick we drew."

Clemson will next host Georgia Southern on Saturday, giving Swinney his wish to go against a non-Power 4 school. Still, it appears some defenders on the Eagles think they can take advantage of holes on Clemson's roster.
