Nebraska Football: Mac Markway Announces He Is Stepping Away from Football

In 2024, Nebraska received a transfer from a former four-star recruit who started one game for LSU as a true freshman. That was Mac Markway and he was going to be the next great tight end for Nebraska. Unfortunately, Markway suffered a knee injury in September of 2024 while at Nebraska. He ended up redshirting that year.

Then in 2025, it happened again. He suffered another season ending injury which sidelined him for the entire 2025 season.

This past off-season he moved to defensive line in hoping to see more snaps during the 2026 season.

Last week Markway played six snaps against Ohio. As of yesterday Matt Rhule mentioned that he envisioned Markway getting more snaps going forward.

Then today, Mac Markway announced on his Instagram that he is no longer playing football.

Markway was extremely thankful for his time at LSU and Nebraska but unfortunately the health of his knees aren’t letting him play at the level he expects from himself.

He mentioned that he still plans to be around the team and help in other ways besides being on the field for games.
