Megan Thee Stallion is dictating life on her terms.
The do-everything Houston artist has found ways to navigate the digital age as a go-hard rapper in one season and then as a college graduate in the next. Entrepreneur with brand deals from Nike to Planet Fitness to Popeyes? Check. Her own tequila and fragrance? Check. The business of being Megan Thee Stallion has given the need for the “Hot Girl” to expand “Hot Girl Summer” into its own universe, complete with dog and mom merch. To the point where she wants to be identified with summer the same way Mariah Carey is recognized for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.
But if there is one prickly subject that follows Megan around, it’s tabloid fodder. As a recent InStyle feature revealed, the Houston rapper is many things: a horror movie buff, a soon-to-be anime character and more. But she will always be about respect.
And has zero tolerance for disrespect.
When asked about the end of her relationship with Klay Thompson in April, Megan didn’t downplay her emotions and while she might move a mile a minute discussing the good in her life, she revealed why she was careful in choosing her words regarding her year-long romance with the NBA star that ended with a very messy and public split.
“I feel like I’ve been put through the washing machine and the dryer with tins, shovels, and a cactus,” she said, adding that the period post-breakup was “very rough.”
“How do I want to say this gently?” she began. “What’s meant for you is always going to work out. And if something is constantly making you feel uncomfortable, just on edge all the time, you probably are not supposed to be there. God will always make you uncomfortable when something is not meant for you. I think I just kept trying to make pieces fit that didn’t belong, trying to fit myself into someone else’s life. I was losing myself a little bit. I am not in the space of finding me again.
“You will not disrespect me. And you will be thankful. Period.”
The statement has already added additional layers to a public relationship that quickly became the subject of parasocial conversations online. Instead of a conversation about Megan Pete and Klay Thompson, it became a conversation about two individuals whose online presence made them avatars for a certain ideal of a person.
Megan’s words in InStyle may give fans a sharper glimpse into her relationship with Thompson and how things fizzled, but the 31-year-old is adamant that she’ll be herself on her terms rather than fit into a box, or even that of a WAG.
“I cannot be disrespected,” Megan said. “I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me. I cannot not go to work. I’m going to be Megan Thee Stallion. I love being me. I love rapping. I love interacting with my fans. I love shooting music videos. I’m not a person who is in the house 24-7. I’m never going to be that. And whoever dates me is gonna have to just understand, like, she is her own person. She’s her own boss. I cannot be minimized.”
She continued, “I will not be behind any man. I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner. I’m never gonna take the backseat to anything. So just going forward, I think I’ve just learned this is the type of person that I want to be with, this is what I will tolerate, this is what I won’t tolerate. And if you can’t take that, we just gotta respectfully go our separate ways.”
