Notre Dame football vs. Rice: All-time series history

Notre Dame will host Rice this weekend in the next installment of a series that has been dominated by the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame owns a 5-0 all-time record against Rice and has outscored their opponent by a combined 195-33. Rice has never scored more than 17 points, and it will be a challenge for them to do so against this vaunted Notre Dame defense this weekend.

The series between the teams first started in Nov. 27, 1915 when the Irish dominated Rice 55-2 in a game in Houston, TX. This game is still the most lopsided game of the series.

The two teams did not play for nearly six decades until Notre Dame shut out Rice 28-0 in a game at Rice Stadium. The following year the Irish won a much closer game by the score of 10-3 in South Bend, which is the closest Rice has ever come to winning.

Lou Holtz was in his second season as the coach of Notre Dame when they played each other again in 1988, a game which the Irish rolled to a 54-11 victory. And then last matchup between the two teams was in 2014 when Notre Dame defeated Rice 48-17.

Notre Dame is coming off a 41-13 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in week 1. Expectations will be for the Irish to handle Rice this upcoming weekend and continue to show they belong in the National Championship conversation.
