Sep. 9—MITCHELL — What all goes into being a college football player at Dakota Wesleyan University?

Weight lifting. Classes. Film study. Homework. And a lot more.

The DWU football team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday when it defeated Doane 34-21 at Joe Quintal Stadium in Mitchell. The Tigers are 1-1 and travel to Iowa this upcoming weekend to play Waldorf College, which has finished winless each of the past two years.

Coach Alex Kretzschmar is in his third year as head coach of the Tigers. He says it's important to look at character when recruiting players and building his team.

That's because when a football player enrolls at DWU, he is expected to balance multiple tasks to learn how to be successful beyond the field.

"Our No. 1 goal as a program is to help the young men reach and exceed their full potential, talking about waking up each day trying to be the best you can."

Hear from coach Kretzschmar, Reed Rus and Caleb Kilbride about playing for the Tigers.
