UNC Not Allowed To Have Recruits At 2026 Home Opener

Amid everything else going on with North Carolina football, the Tar Heels have accepted a punishment stemming from a self-reported recruiting violation that will keep would-be recruits out of the stadium this weekend.
On Wednesday, North Carolina football announced that they will not be hosting any unofficial visits for Saturday’s game against ETSU. While they are allowed to host official visits that day, the program has chosen not to. North Carolina now considers the matter resolved via the NCAA process.
“Last season we self-reported a violation through our normal university compliance measures,” the school said, via 247Sports.com. “As a result, we are unable to host unofficial visits this weekend versus ETSU. We are still permitted to host official visits this weekend but have decided as a program to concentrate our official visits on the remaining five home games. The situation has been properly resolved through the NCAA process, and we have worked with the NCAA and University compliance on appropriate and corrective action.”
The situation stems from an incident in 2025 where the team suspended defensive backs coach Armond Hawkins for an NCAA rules breach regarding extra benefits.
The punishment comes on the heels of the resignation of UNC GM Mike Lombardi amid an investigation into the school. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is currently on a medical leave of absence, is also believed to be a subject of the investigation, along with others.
Fans and analysts were amazed that North Carolina has yet another problem to deal with:
“Rumor is that Carolina was offered options. This, or Belichick had to give up his parking spot for 3 days, from midnight to 4:00 AM. They chose this,” one user joked.
“Time is a flat circle,” ESPN’s Brooke Pryor remarked.
“Clean house…most inept administration and coaching staff. It’s not an isolated incident here and there. It’s pervasive and so embarrassing,” wrote a third.
“I legitimately was not aware of it even being possible at this point to get in trouble for recruiting violations. And yet here we are.”
“How in the world can we (expletive) up recruiting with all that is going on with NIL?”
Can’t start or end fast enough…
Things have just gone from bad to worse at times for head coach Bill Belichick. Despite getting a signature win in his team’s season opener against TCU in Dublin, it’s been a far more eventful two weeks since that win than he would have liked.
While the Tar Heels should be able to take down ETSU without many issues, they’ll take on a very motivated Clemson team on the road on September 19 before welcoming almighty Notre Dame to Chapel Hill two weeks after that.
Suffice it to say, things have the potential to get even uglier over the next month.
