Over the weekend, the Notre Dame football program got off to a strong start to the season by defeating Wisconsin by a score of 41-13. The win got Notre Dame in the win column to open the year after they stumbled out of the gates to an 0-2 mark last season.
Not playing in that game for the Fighting Irish was star linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who was out due to injury, but on Thursday, the team got an optimistic update from head coach Marcus Freeman on his status for Saturday’s home game against Rice.
“Marcus Freeman said Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa has had a good week of practice and he’s optimistic the star linebacker will play against Rice on Saturday,” reported Pete Sampson of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

Jack Soble of BlueandGold.com later confirmed on X that “Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is off Notre Dame’s Thursday injury report.”
“At some point, we’ve got to say, ‘Okay, here’s the start.’ You’re not going to go out there and pick up right where you left off. His practice volume has continuously increased. We were intentional about the work we put in last week to see if he could get ready to be at that point where, mentally and physically, he was ready to go. We think we were a couple days away,” said Freeman, per Oliver Vandervoort of Slap The Sign.
Having Viliamu-Asa back in the lineup will certainly help the Fighting Irish in their quest to get back into the championship mix, even if they likely won’t exactly need him to beat an overmatched Rice team on Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm ET.
