Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry Calls Out 'Extremely Dangerous' Behavior From SEC

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is arguably the most powerful LSU fan in the country and he’s using his platform to call out the Southeastern Conference for taking action against his state’s biggest football school.

Appearing on Fox News, Governor Landry admonished SEC and commissioner Greg Sankey for their “extremely dangerous” approach to the situation. He accused the SEC of trying to “villainize” LSU.

“LSU did not create the litigation in Louisiana. LSU did not create the litigation in Alabama. The SEC did. The SEC tries to villainize LSU,” Governor Landry said.

Not buying it

College football fans (sans LSU fans) collectively mocked Landry for his comments, accusing him of being the one playing the victim and pointing out that he’s made the school look foolish for a while now.

“I’ve seen my share of bad boosters who steered good programs to stupid places. Same with coaches, ADs and presidents. I’ve never seen a sitting governor put his hands on the wheel with so much hubris,” one user remarked.

“‘LSU did not create the litigation in Alabama.’ That’s technically true if ‘litigation’ means the federal case, but a school that incentivizes athletes to sue by promising them roster spots if they can defeat the SEC/NCAA in court seems more like the ‘creator’ of the root issue,” wrote another.

“Landry with his LSU gear on pandering. Buddy is a ULL grad. With his JD from private Loyola. The fight is over and now guy wants to pop off. If this whole thing wasn’t happening close to November he wouldn’t even think to say anything,” a third wrote.

At the end of the day, it was LSU that villainized themselves by trying to be among the first to actively pursue players that had attended NFL training camp and recruit them to return to college and play.

While there’s certainly a discussion to be had over how the SEC has handled it, LSU is not some blameless victim of circumstance – and Governor Landry knows it.
