Nebraska defensive end Mac Markway announces retirement

Nebraska football defensive lineman Mac Markway announced his retirement from football on Wednesday afternoon. He announced it on social media.

He was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class. He was a tight end coming out of high school and committed to LSU. He caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown as a freshman in 2023.

Markway came to Nebraska in 2024, joining the roster without entering the transfer portal. A knee injury and fall camp ended his 2024 season. Unfortunately, the injury bug would follow him into 2025, as he suffered another season-ending injury during fall camp.

The transfer officially moved to defensive end before the 2026 campaign, which will now be cut short. He made a statement on social media announcing his retirement.

“The reality is my knees just aren’t what they used to be and aren’t letting me play at the level I want to," he said in an Instagram post. "I got a huge weight and stress off my shoulders with this decision and l am truly at peace with it."

Markway certainly had a unique journey to the Nebraska football program, and it will be fascinating to see what his next chapter is.
