Aggies' Mike Elko Takes a Playful Jab at LSU as SEC Drama Unfolds

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko rarely needs much prompting to offer an honest opinion, and his latest comments on the ongoing situation surrounding LSU provided another reminder of that.

The SEC controversy stems from LSU’s roster situation and the league’s concerns surrounding the addition of former professional players.

The situation escalated to the point that the SEC was reportedly considering disciplinary measures against the Tigers, including the possibility of expulsion. LSU ultimately backed down from adding the players in question, bringing the immediate crisis to an end.

But that did not stop Elko from giving his two cents on the whole situation.

"This is a little bit like the son figuring out where the limits are until Dad comes home and raises his voice, and then the son goes, 'I was just kidding; I didn't mean any of that.,'" Elko said on The Aggie Football Hour.

"I think that's what you're seeing. LSU will be in the SEC. LSU will be fired up when we go to Baton Rouge in a couple of weeks. All of those things are going to happen. This is just a little bit of parenting going on right now."

The comment was a classic Elko response, mixing a serious assessment with just enough humor to take a shot at the situation without turning it into a major controversy of its own.

For Elko, however, the bigger picture is what matters. Texas A&M is preparing for a trip to Baton Rouge later this season, meaning the Aggies will eventually get an opportunity to deal with LSU on the football field rather than through the conference office.

That matchup could carry plenty of intrigue regardless of the controversy. Texas A&M is coming off a dominant 50-0 season-opening victory over Missouri State and enters Week 2 with significant expectations.

LSU, meanwhile, enters the season under new head coach Lane Kiffin and is attempting to re-establish itself as one of the SEC’s top programs.

Elko’s comments also fit the personality he has displayed since returning to College Station. The Aggies’ coach has consistently shown a willingness to inject humor into press conferences and interviews while keeping his primary focus on his team.

Ultimately, the LSU situation appears to have reached a resolution, but Elko’s “parenting” comment gave Texas A&M fans another reason to laugh at the drama surrounding one of college football's most prominent programs.

And when Texas A&M eventually travels to Baton Rouge, the Aggies will have the chance to settle things the old-fashioned way.
