10 storylines to watch in 2026 SEC football Week 2

SEC football Week 2 won't feature nearly as many lopsided cupcake games as Week 1, which instantly makes it a much more attractive and appealing schedule of games. Let's look at the storylines to watch in the conference this weekend:

1 – Missouri maturity

The Tigers face Kansas on Friday night in the Border War. Kansas is not an elite team, so this is a game Missouri needs to win if it wants to be seen as an upper (or middle) echelon team in the SEC. Emotions in this rivalry game will be sky-high. Missouri has to find the maturity needed to exhibit discipline and not get caught up in the kind of overzealous displays which lead to careless decisions and brainless penalties.

2 – Alabama on the road

Alabama visits Kentucky. The Crimson Tide need to show they won't get ambushed away from home the way they did by Florida State early last season. Alabama's defense needs to be ready for Will Stein's Kentucky offense. Players need to do their film study and not get caught out of position.

3 – Kentucky's moment

On the other side of Bama-Kentucky is Big Blue's chance to make a statement under Stein, its big-talking new head coach from Oregon, where Stein served under former Kirby Smart assistant Dan Lanning. Stein is one of the more intriguing figures in SEC coaching. Can he make the first really big mark among the first-year coaches in the conference in 2026?

4 – A&M defense

Texas A&M hosts Arizona State. The Aggies' defense faces a Kenny Dillingham ASU offense which will throw a lot of different looks their way. If A&M stands tall on defense in this game, it should feel it will be ready for any future chalkboard challenges as the season continues.

5 – Oklahoma into the Big House

Oklahoma goes to Michigan in one of the featured games of the week. Michigan essentially lost to Western Michigan, even though the final score did not reflect that. Let's be willing to say that. The Big Ten re-engineered that outcome. Michigan will be hurt and motivated. Oklahoma's defense should enjoy a substantial matchup advantage over the Wolverines. It's up to the Sooners to smother Michigan's struggling offense and get a win on the road in front of over 100,000 people.

6 – Tennessee toughness

The Vols face a Georgia Tech team which will be very mad after stumbling against Colorado. Georgia Tech's offensive line looked horrendous in that game. Tennessee needs to win this game with its defensive line dominating the Yellow Jackets up front.

7 – Arkansas advancement

Arkansas at Utah is an SEC game everyone will watch, not just Hog fans. The UA offense has to find a way to evolve and improve, even if the Razorbacks don't win. Ryan Silverfield has to get his players to be more aggressive and ambitious. Avoiding mistakes isn't enough to win games. The Hogs need to make plays.

8 – Mississippi State goes north

The Bulldogs visit Minnesota in an SEC-Big Ten battle. If MSU wants to make a bowl game, this is a must-win. Can State handle a Big Ten road environment and PJ Fleck's Minnesota game plan?

9 – Auburn quarterback

Byrum Brown was awful against Baylor. He needs to be a lot better for the Tigers to have any chance this year. Auburn hosts Southern Miss in a get-right game. Let's see how Brown handles it.

10 – Arch nemesis

Arch Manning and Texas scored just seven points at Ohio State last year. Now comes the rematch at home in Austin. It's time for Mr. Manning to prove himself. No more excuses.
