Next to no one thinks that Michigan football can upset Oklahoma in Week 2 after an abysmal showing in Week 1. But that's not no one.
Despite ticket prices plummeting since Saturday and Michigan being something of a national punchline, the Wolverines and Sooners are meeting again, one year after the maize and blue's trip to Norman, but this time in Ann Arbor. However, both teams looked diametrically opposed in Week 1 in terms of on-field performance. However, Erick Smith at USA TODAY Sports thinks you'll likely see a much different Michigan team this Saturday compared to last.
In the USA TODAY Sports Week 2 bold predictions piece, Smith argues that the Wolverines and Georgia Tech are each better than they had appeared, noting that one or both could emerge surprisingly victorious on Saturday while facing SEC opponents.
Never overvalue Week 1. It happens time and time again. Team plays poorly in opener and rebounds with requisite focus and intensity the following week with season on the brink. It also helps to have the opponent lured into a false sense of security having seen those first-week struggles. All this brings us to the fates of Michigan and Georgia Tech. Both get visits from SEC teams – Oklahoma and Tennessee, respectively – after poor opening performances. At least one and maybe both pull off a home upset. — Erick Smith
Michigan will need to improve several facets of its game if it's to win vs. OU. Not only was quarterback Bryce Underwood still struggling, the offensive line and run game both were subpar. Defensively, it was better, but that side of the ball allowed the Broncos to sustain a near-14-minute drive spanning from the third into the fourth quarter.
