What did Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson say about the Tigers ahead of Saturday’s game?

Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson met with the media earlier this week for his weekly press conference. He spent a lot of time talking about the loss against Oregon and the upcoming game against the Tigers.

Danielson was the defensive coordinator in 2023 when Memphis beat the Broncos inside Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, but he said that the team hasn’t talked much about that game leading up to this seasons matchup. The head coach said there is so much roster turnover, and the Tigers are a completely new team from a roster and staff perspective, but he remembers the game and wants to get revenge on Saturday.

Quarterback Maddux Madsen was on the roster that season and threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns after replacing former Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green. 

Memphis trailed 17-0 in the second quarter before scoring two touchdowns to make it a three-point game at the half. The Tigers dominated the second half and led by 13 points before the Broncos tacked on two touchdowns at the end of the game.

Here’s what Danielson said about the Tigers during his weekly press conference.

Memphis’ offense:

The offense has been successful for the Tigers through two games, and they’ve established the rushing attack. Last week, Memphis ran for 335 yards, and Jaylin Carter ran for 183 yards and four touchdowns. 

Danielson talked at length about Huff’s offense and compared them to Oregon with how explosive and “high-powered” they are.

“I think schematically there’s some differences [from Oregon], but they’re high-powered,” Danielson said. “You look at every position. Their quarterback is big-time. If he escapes the pocket, he can create explosive plays. They will have designed runs for him. He can absolutely throw the ball a mile. He has receivers that can go up and get it. Like I said, their running back is the nation’s leading rusher. That’s not my opinion those are the facts, and their o-line does a great job working together.”

The Broncos’ head coach talked about Marcus Stokes in particular and how he can be a difference-maker with his arm and with his legs. It seems like Boise State will attempt to slow the rushing attack, and it will be interesting to see how effective Stokes can be through the air in his second road game. 

Memphis’ defense:

Danielson spoke highly on the Tigers’ defense, especially the defensive line. The Broncos’ offensive line gave up three sacks and five tackles for loss, and Memphis could have similar success.

“Their defense is really really sound. Their front four is going to be one of the best front fours we’re going to see,” Danielson said. “Their four-man rush is like they’re bringing six. It’s that type of pressure you’re getting from these front four. They play really well together. They’re sound in coverage, and when they do bring more than four, it’s happening and it’s happening quick.”

Coach Huff:

Like Charles Huff, Danielson spoke highly about the job Huff is doing, and it appears both coaches have a lot of respect for the other. Earlier in the week, Huff said that he has been watching Danielson and how he has built his culture in Boise.

Boise State’s head coach said he was impressed by the success Huff has had since becoming a head coach.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for coach Huff,” Danielson said. “I don’t know how many guys have been able to win consistently as quickly as he has. Got a ton of respect for him and his staff, and it’s going to be a big-time matchup on Saturday afternoon.”
