ESPN announces Florida Gators ’30 for 30′ days before premiere

On Jan. 1, 1990, the University of Florida hired Steve Spurrier as head football coach. Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy as the Florida Gators’ quarterback in 1966, so hype hit astronomical levels leading up to the 1990 college football season.
But in August 1990, unspeakable tragedy struck Florida’s Gainesville campus when a serial killer murdered five students — Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Manuel Taboada and Tracy Paules — over the course of four days.
ESPN Films revisited that gruesome, grief-ridden time in Florida history with 14 Days in Gainesville, a 30 for 30 documentary directed by Daniel B. Levin.

In the accompanying trailer, a chipper Spurrier sits down for his interview and says, “Alright! 1990.” That segues into archival footage of Gator fanatics and football highlights from that time, juxtaposed with eerie footage from campus surrounding the murders.
“Against that backdrop, the documentary chronicles a community grappling with fear and grief while the start of a new football season approached,” ESPN’s official release reads. “14 Days in Gainesville explores how students, players, coaches, and residents experienced those extraordinary days — and how a football program preparing for a new beginning became intertwined with a community confronting an unthinkable tragedy and a serial killer on the loose.”
“14 Days in Gainesville is more than just a college football film,” Joe Townley, the film’s executive producer, said. “It’s the powerful story of a community confronting unimaginable tragedy and how, in the midst of fear and grief, a football team helped bring people together and helped a community begin to heal. We’re incredibly proud to tell this story with ESPN Films and 30 for 30.”
The announcement comes just four days before 14 Days in Gainesville premieres on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN and the ESPN App.
