Colorado football returns home for favorable matchup against Weber State

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes football program have to be feeling good after a Week 1 victory at Georgia Tech. This weekend's home opener against Weber State brings a much different opponent to the table.

The lower-division FCS teams from Odgen, Utah come into Boulder for its third game of the season, which have all been on the road this year. Colorado is Weber State's only FBS opponent this season for a first-ever matchup between the schools.

Where Colorado stands right now

After pulling out a 14-13 win over Georgia Tech, Sanders' crew, led by quarterback Julian Lewis, will be looking for their first home win since midway through last season. The Buffs ended the 2025 campaign on a five-game losing streak, allowing opponents forty or more points three times during that span of time.

During Week 1, Lewis looked decent in the pocket against the Yellow Jackets. The former five-star threw for 124 yards and a touchdown to tight end Charlie Williams in the final minute, securing the one-point win in Atlanta. But QB play wasn't the story of the game with Colorado's new Go-Go offense under Brennan Marion. For the first time in Sanders' tenure with the Buffaloes, the team made a concerted effort to run the ball.

Three CU running backs had at least 10 carries, setting up Lewis in manageable situations. If the Buffs are able to keep drives moving down the field, it's going to be a long day for Weber State. Marion gave a lot of clues about how his offensive game planning could be constructed. Yet there's always a little spice to the play calls.

On defense, Chris Marve's new-look defense looked solid against the Georgia Tech offense. The Buffs swarmed the ball and Lamont Lester Jr. picked up three sacks to earn National Player of the Week honors. Colorado also has eight tackles for loss, which didn't happen all of last season. This matched the Buffs 2024 home finale against Oklahoma State.

Tickets and Payout

Needless to say, the hype is worn off for Sanders since he arrived on campus four years ago. Colorado reportedly has over 5,000 tickets available for the game less than 24 hours before kickoff.

The Wildcats are 1-1 overall after a 47-42 loss at Southern Utah last week. Win or lose, Weber State walks out of Boulder with a guaranteed $700,000 from Colorado.

This should be an easy win for Colorado, who will be looking to solidify a few things before next week's game at Northwestern.
