GAME THREAD: Washington meets up with Kansas State

Good morning, Cougar football fans.

Your Washington State Cougars are getting ready for Week 2 non-conference action against the Kansas State Wildcats.

WSU is coming off a narrow loss at rival Washington on Sunday, 24-10. Despite the loss, the Cougars had plenty of positives to take away from the Apple Cup. Mainly, from the defensive side of things. The Cougar defense held Washington to just 10 points through the first three quarters and 2-10 on third-down conversions. It wasn’t until Washington’s final two drives that they really began to stack up the yards and explosive plays. In a game that WSU was three-possession underdogs in, they were within a score at multiple points in the final quarter. The front seven is what stood out for WSU in that game, containing the Huskies’ run attack and putting pressure on quarterback Demond Williams Jr. Offensively, the Cougars have room for improvement. They will likely be without speedster wide receiver Tony Freeman, who suffered an injury in Week 1. Caden Pinnick showed flashes of brilliance last time out, scampering for 61 yards and a touchdown, and seemed to settle in later in the game with his arm.

Kansas State cruised through Week 1, defeating FCS Nicholls State 71-3. Quarterback Avery Johnson threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns before coming out of the game midway through the third quarter. Six different Wildcats ran in touchdowns in the game, with junior Rodney Fields Jr. leading the way with 101 yards on 14 carries and one of those six touchdowns.

Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. PST and will be broadcasted nationally on TNT and streaming on HBO Max.
