The No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners suffered a brutal 17-10 Week 2 loss to the Michigan Wolverines. All eyes are on John Mateer, as the redshirt senior had quite an ugly performance. Shortly after the game, head coach Brent Venables shared his take on Mateer’s play.
During his postgame press conference, Venables admitted that the 22-year-old signal-caller played “uneven” against Michigan, according to George Stoia III of On3 Sports. He did credit Mateer for managing the game well, at the very least.
“A little uneven,” Venables said about Mateer… “Some missed throws… We have to do a cleaner job on protection… He did a good job of managing the game.”

When asked about the criticism John Mateer faces, the fifth-year head coach supported his quarterback, per Stoia. Venables appears confident Mateer can bounce back from his ugly performance against the Wolverines.
“He’s been criticized all offseason,” Venables said… “This is no different… He will have resolve. We all will.”
John Mateer finished the day with 189 passing yards, 45 rushing yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He completed just 17 of his 33 pass attempts, giving him a 51.5% completion percentage on the day.
His first year with Oklahoma was nothing to gloat about, and so far in the 2026-27 season, it seems like those issues are continuing. After playing at Washington State for three years, Mateer ended his first campaign with the Sooners with 2,885 passing yards, 431 rushing yards, 22 total touchdowns (14 passing, 8 rushing), and 11 interceptions while completing 62.2% of his pass attempts.
Mateer and Oklahoma will have a chance to bounce back in Week 4. The program is scheduled to face off against the New Mexico Lobos in another home contest. That matchup should iron out the kinks before the Sooners’ Week 4 game against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs.
