The first few weeks of college football have certainly been eventful, but not always in the best way, as Craig Carton pointed out this week.
While college football has become known and beloved for its bizarre storylines and games that do not always go according to plan, the past few weeks have taken it to the extreme, with the LSU Tigers trying to roster players who spent time on NFL preseason rosters, fans storming the field after the Michigan Wolverines pulled off a controversial win as a four-touchdown favorite, and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights shooting off postgame fireworks after one of the worst losses in program history.
It’s been wild, to say the least, but Carton has a different way to describe it: embarrassing.
“110,000 people go to Michigan games. Morons. Every one of them,” Carton said of the reaction to Michigan’s controversial win over Western Michigan. “They storm the field. Dude, you were favored by 27 points. You lost the game. And then you got a reprieve, and you won the game. Why are you storming the field? You were favored by four touchdowns. Morons.”

“I would tell my kids, ‘Pack up your bags, you’re coming home. You got stupid at Michigan,'” Carton added. “You’re favored by four touchdowns. Why are we storming the field?”
Craig Carton then brought up the state of the Rutgers football program and athletic department, which has accumulated more than $500 million in debt since joining the Big Ten just over a decade ago. To add to those struggles, Rutgers lost to UMass in its home opener, while in the midst of a 16-game losing streak and having lost 23 consecutive games to FBS opponents.
“I’m trying to find out which was worse. Losing to UMass, who had, like, an 18-game losing streak against FBS teams, or Michigan storming the field after getting the Hail Mary on their second attempt at home,” Carton said.
Carton was then reminded that Rutgers followed the loss by setting off a fireworks display.
“Which was worse – fireworks at Rutgers or storming the field at Michigan?” Carton said.
The incidents led Carton to criticize the whole college football landscape and college sports as a whole.
“College sports is embarrassing across the board,” Carton said.
That said, that isn’t stopping Carton from being entertained.
“I love it,” he said. “I watch every game I can.”
