Ohio State football set the tone with Jay Timmons’ takeaway on the first play Saturday in Austin. Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith gashed Texas from there.
Smith found cracks in the Longhorns secondary, continuing to further prove his receiving dominance. He walked into halftime catching six passes for 110 yards and scoring once, as OSU took a big 20-3 lead into halftime.
Smith forced Texas into early fundamental mistakes, including getting this defender to take the wrong hip turn.

Draft expert Dane Brugler for The Athletic even brought up an early, striking stat attached to the wideout.
“Jeremiah Smith already has more receiving yards in the 1Q tonight (48) than the last 2 years vs. Texas combined (46),” Brugler posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
Smith indeed struggled in the two previous meetings against the Longhorns, despite OSU winning both games. He did face his share of blanketed coverage against the nation’s No. 4 ranked team.

But Smith squeezed one late first half touchdown to really deflate the energy inside a loud Darrell K. Royal Stadium.

Even more astonishing for Smith, his 110 receiving yards at the half was more than the 97 total yards from Texas.
The ‘Horns continued struggling to bottle the dynamic junior wideout. He added one more deep grab that landed inside Texas territory.

That Smith catch helped lead to one more field goal on the side of the top-ranked Buckeyes, making it 23-3 into the third quarter.
So Smith continues to show the nation how he’s got few peers in the college game. And his Buckeyes are cruising in this top five showdown.
