Big Ten rushing yardage leaders after Week 2

The race for the Big Ten rushing title is off and running with a new leader sitting on top of the Big Ten two weeks into the season.

Cam Edwards of Michigan State has taken over the top spot in the Big Ten rushing yardage department following a big game in Week 2. Edwards rushed for 152 yards in Michigan State's 35-7 victory over Eastern Michigan. Edwards also added a pair of touchdowns to his season total and is averaging 5.21 yards per carry throught the first two games of the season.

Rocketing up the Big Ten leaderboard this week is Purdue sophomore Fame Ijeboi. Ijeboi was heavily involved in Purdue's double-overtime loss to Wake Forest by carrying the football 27 times for 114 yards. He scored three touchdowns in the losing effort to bring his season rushing touchdown total to 4, good for second in the conference behind only UCLA's Wayne Knight.

After two weeks of play, the Penn State running game is being put in the spotlight a bit due to a relatively slow start compared to expectations going into the season. Carson Hansen, who followed Matt Campbell from Iowa State to Penn State, has been the top running back on the depth chart for each of the first two games of the season, and he had a better performance in the box score in Week 2 compared to the season opener. Hansen rushed for 84 yards on 19 carries against Temple in Week 2 to bring his season rushing yardage count to 132 yards. That puts him ahead of the pace he had last season after two games, when he was on pace for a 1,000-yard rushing season (he missed one game in the regular season and finished with 952 rushing yards in 11 games with Iowa State).

James Peoples was a bit more productive against Temple and is second on the team with 73 rushing yards after two games. Cam Wallace (44 yards) and Quinton Martin Jr. (38 yards) are the only running backs to have scored a touchdown in the first two games for Penn State, and they are third and fourth on the team in rushing yardage, respectively.
