Monday ‘Dawg Bites Advises Ryan Silverfield To Mind His Own House

Your Georgia Bulldogs open up conference play this Saturday in beautiful Fayetteville, Arkansas against Ryan Silverfield’s Razorbacks. The Bulldogs are currently a 24.5 point favorite at FanDuel, a number that seems pretty spot on to me. The Razorbacks and the Natural State crowd will certainly be keyed up for a visit from the two-time defending SEC champions.

But Arky is coming off a 43-10 drubbing at the hands of the Utah Utes, a game in which they actually trailed 29-3 at the half and were never actually anywhere close to the neighborhood of being “in it.” The Fightin’ Silverfields gave up 442 yards of offense, allowed the Utes a 56% 3rd down conversion rate, and lost the penalty battle. They also managed a paltry 61 rushing yards, 2.2 per carry, which is just no way to keep it close on the road.

The Hawgs, pardon the pun, got absolutely smoked. Then they got back home late and bruised, and may have the beginnings of a quarterback controversy on their hands as backup AJ Hill led the team’s only touchdown drive late.

Is it bad when a beat writer appears to have started a campaign to get the athletic director fired two games into the season? That seems pretty bad.

Coach Silverfield, you may recall, came to Arkansas from Memphis, where he had some pointed words last year about some of Georgia’s legal issues. Would Kirby Smart use that sort of thing for motivation? Of course he would, Kirby Smart could find a line of disrespect buried in the folds of a Cracker Barrel menu between the meat loaf platter and Grandpa’s country fried breakfast.

If he’s looking for motivation, I’d expect Coach Smart to start with the second half of the Western Kentucky game, after which he noted some of the Bulldogs’ reserves weren’t quite ready to play to the Georgia standard.It was indeed a sloppy second half, both in terms of weather and execution, and the two are probably somewhat related.

Still, there’s nothing I love more that a big Bulldog win which nonetheless leaves Kirby with a laundry list of areas in which to demand improvement. Remember, every time the Top ‘Dawg yells at a reserve corner for not playing physical against the run at a Tuesday practice, an angel gets its wings.
