Texas A&M faces Kentucky with chance to make SEC statement

Texas A&M has handled its first two tests. Now the Aggies find out what their fast start looks like against SEC competition.
The Texas A&M Aggies host Kentucky on Saturday, September 19, at Kyle Field in their conference opener, carrying a 2-0 record into a matchup that gives Mike Elko’s team an opportunity to establish some early SEC momentum.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN or ESPN2.
Texas A&M enters the game after beating Arizona State 48-20, but the final score doesn’t completely explain how the afternoon unfolded. The Sun Devils stayed within striking distance into the second half before the Aggies took control with a dominant closing stretch.
Defense provided the biggest spark.
Texas A&M forced four turnovers against Arizona State and returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving the Aggies their first game with multiple pick-sixes since 1999. That helped turn a competitive game into a comfortable victory and continued an impressive opening two weeks for Elko’s defense.
The bigger question remains the offense.
Quarterback Marcel Reed gives Texas A&M an experienced playmaker, while receivers Mario Craver and Isaiah Horton provide legitimate threats downfield. But an offensive line featuring four new starters is still developing, and the Aggies haven’t consistently imposed their running game.
Kentucky could test those weaknesses.
The Wildcats are 1-1 under first-year coach Will Stein after falling 45-17 to Alabama. Kentucky actually led the Crimson Tide 17-13 at halftime before Alabama completely flipped the game, scoring 32 unanswered points after the break.
That collapse makes Kentucky’s trip to College Station considerably tougher.
Playing at Kyle Field brings another problem. Texas A&M drew 107,782 fans for its season opener against Missouri State, continuing a streak of crowds topping 100,000. Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey and the Wildcats offense will have to operate in one of college football’s loudest environments.
Texas A&M shouldn’t need another pair of defensive touchdowns to win this game, but Reed and the offense need to become more efficient as the schedule gets harder.

Kentucky showed for a half against Alabama that it can create problems. The challenge is sustaining it.
If Texas A&M cleans up its offensive inconsistency and avoids giving Kentucky short fields, the Aggies have a strong opportunity to reach 3-0 and start SEC play with a win before their first road test at LSU.
