Clemson’s Win Brings Clarity

Clemson’s win over Georgia State brings some much-needed clarity to the 2026 Clemson team. Many questions surrounded the Tigers coming into the season, and even after week one. The 22-7 win over the Eagles answered many of those questions. The good pieces showed themselves in the victory; however, the cracks were on full display as well.

The best thing Clemson showed against Georgia State is that it can still play very good defense. This week’s defensive performance was a huge improvement over the prior week. The Tigers held the Eagles offense to just one score in the game and 22 yards on the ground. Players showed up on all three levels for the Clemson defense.

The revamped defensive back group has proven to be a bright spot for the team thus far. The third-year returner Ashton Hampton might be the most important piece of the position group, though. Hampton made a few great third-down stops that helped force five straight three-and-outs for Georgia Southern in the first half. Big expectations have been placed on the star cornerback this season, and so far he’s lived up to them.

The biggest star of the night, however, was defensive end Will Heldt. He showed he has what it takes to anchor the defensive front by racking up two sacks and three tackles for loss on the night. Both sacks came on critical third-down plays, when the Tigers needed a stop to keep momentum away from the Eagles. Heldt has been a huge difference maker since he arrived at Clemson. Tom Allen will need him and Hampton to keep being impact players for his defense if the unit is going to keep improving.

As the defensive front got better, the offensive front continued to struggle. The Tigers’ offensive line gave up 11 tackles for loss and two sacks against a group of five competition. That number could’ve been greater if Tait Reynolds wasn’t able to scramble as well as he does.

Clemson also rushed the ball for 150 yards total against the Eagles, averaging less than four yards per carry. That is not good enough for a Tigers offense that is supposed to be establishing the run. The inexperience at the quarterback position can be helped if the ground game is at least serviceable.

The Georgia Southern defensive line is impressive, but Clemson will have to face better as the season goes on. If the offensive line can’t improve, it’s going to be a long season for the Tigers.

One thing that should be crystal clear now is that it’s Reynolds time to take the reins as the starting quarterback. He did very well taking the majority of snaps on offense Saturday night. Reynolds finished the game completing 16 of his 27 pass attempts for 178 yards while also running the ball 14 times for 38 yards.

Christopher Vizzina’s career as the Clemson quarterback might not last much longer because of poor timing more than anything. He waited his time like he was supposed to, and seemingly did everything right to earn his turn. But with how bad the offensive line looks at the moment, Reynolds’ ability to escape the pocket and make plays is needed behind center.

Right now, it’s hard to see things getting much better with Vizzina as the starter. He will already have to miss the conference opener due to an elbow injury he suffered in the first quarter. As long as that is the case, allow Reynolds to get as much experience as possible.

Against the Eagles, Reynolds looked more comfortable each drive he ran onto the field.  Let him take over full-time and learn his lessons early. If he takes the bumps and bruises now, by the end of the season he’ll begin to prove whether he truly is the future of the program. If it works, fans will rally behind the potential of where Reynolds can take the program in the next couple of years.
