Florida State football opted not to fire head coach Mike Norvell after a dreadful run last season, but after a shaky start once again in 2026, his seat continues to get hotter and hotter. Despite that, he wasn’t the first in a power position to lose his job in Tallahassee this season.

Florida State has fired athletic director Michael Alford, according to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson. School president Richard McCullough made the decision on Monday and a search for a replacement will begin imminently.

Alford has been in his position at Florida State since 2021. He previously served as the AD at Central Michigan and the associate AD at Oklahoma.

Florida State has had some success during Alford’s time there. He oversaw a great run for the Seminoles on the gridiron from 2022-23, in which Norvell led them to a 23-4 record and nearly made the College Football Playoff. Since then, however, FSU is just 8-18, including a pedestrian 1-1 mark to start this season.

The basketball program has seen a similar downfall in recent years. The Seminoles have now missed the NCAA Tournament in five consecutive seasons after emerging as one of the most consistent programs in the ACC in the late 2010s. They moved on from head coach Leonard Hamilton following the 2024-25 season and are now trying to build back up under Luke Loucks, and now he will be reporting to someone else.

It remains to be seen how long Norvell will last as the head football coach, but this move makes it clear that people at Florida State are beginning to get antsy. The Seminoles were able to recover from a Week 1 loss to SMU with a win over New Mexico State in Week 2, even if it came in relatively uninspiring fashion.

Things aren’t getting any easier on that front. Florida State has a trip to Tuscaloosa to play No. 10 Alabama on Saturday, and four of its next five opponents are currently ranked in the top 25. If Norvell can’t get some big wins in there, he could be out the door next.
