John Henry Daley Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Following Oklahoma Dominance

The Big Ten Conference officially named Michigan edge defender John Henry Daley the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following his dominant performance in Michigan’s 17–10 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma.
Daley, a senior transfer from Utah who followed head coach Kyle Whittingham to Ann Arbor, delivered a breakout performance in front of the home crowd at Michigan Stadium. The Alpine, Utah native finished the afternoon with eight total tackles, three tackles for loss, and his first official sack in a Michigan uniform.
His impact at the line of scrimmage proved pivotal in holding Oklahoma to ten points. Daley was a constant disruption for Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, collapsing the pocket on passing downs and stopping the run in crucial moments. After going without a tackle for loss in Michigan’s opener against Western Michigan, Daley’s performance against the Sooners established him as the focal point of the Wolverine pass rush.
The pathway to Ann Arbor for Daley was rooted in a star-studded track record out west. A former star at Lone Peak High School, Daley initially began his collegiate career at Brigham Young University before transferring to Utah. In 2025 with the Utes, he established himself as one of the premier pass rushers in college football, earning First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Big 12 honors after recording 48 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks.
When Whittingham took over the Michigan program, Daley followed his head coach to the Big Ten via the transfer portal. His transition was expected to elevate Michigan’s defensive front, and his Week 2 performance validated those high expectations on a national stage.
Following the top fifteen win, Whittingham praised his defense’s ability to anchor the team through early growing pains. "Great effort, team effort, but still have a lot of things to clean up," Whittingham noted in his postgame comments. He added, "Very proud of the way they responded after the performance last week, that was great to see. They worked hard all week in practice, and it showed out there today". Later addressing the defensive unit specifically, Whittingham pointed out, "One touchdown allowed in eight quarters of football. They're a good football team. In my opinion, they're deserving of their ranking".
The win helped Michigan rebound from an ugly 13-12 season-opening victory over Western Michigan and provided an immediate boost of momentum ahead of conference play. The Wolverine defense held Oklahoma to just 3.4 yards per carry and generated consistent backfield penetration behind Daley's three tackles for loss, which tied for the highest single-game mark in the Big Ten during Week 2. His recognition as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week marks his first conference honor since joining the program.
